FORMER Australian Test cricket captain Steve Waugh AO will help Wollongong celebrate Australia Day.
The ahm ambassador has accepted an invitation from the health insurer to spend the national day in the city at its Australia Day celebration around Wollongong's foreshore. The visit coincides with the 20th anniversary of Waugh's relationship with ahm. That relationship started when the former Australian of the Year and 2005 Father of the Year first became a member.Wollongong Lord Mayor Alex Darling said Waugh would be very welcome because he knew what it meant to be an Australian and could share that with the city's newest Australian citizens on Australia Day when he took part in the citizenship ceremony. He will also participate in a special beach cricket instructional session and a guest appearance on the main stage and kids' corner at Lang Park. The Wollongong IMB Hawks will help Waugh with many of the activities, watch his cricket instruction and hold a basketball demonstration on the main stage.Ahm chief executive Mike McLeod said he was delighted to have such high-profile sports personalities helping the 35-year-old business celebrate Australia's national day and promote Wollongong. The official Australia Day program launch is at Belmore Basin on January 15.
